Bachelor Pad Music Sampler

What is Bachelor Pad Music?

Bachelor Pad, aka Space Age Pop, was a predominantly instrumental style that combined jazz, orchestral, big band, island/Polynesian sounds and Latin rhythms into a style all its own. It often incorporated electronic sounds, Hammond organ, Theremin, and multiple percussion instruments with standard musical instruments. The result was a modern, lilting style that appealed to the younger, hipper crowd who were too old for Rock n Roll, and too young for Perry Como. Bachelor Pad Music spanned from approximately 1950 to the mid 1960s, and is most identified with the late 50s-early 60s.

The terms “Bachelor Pad Music” and “Space Age Pop” were actually coined much later, around the 1980s-90s to encompass what was several styles of music when recorded – described then as anything from off-beat jazz to Exotica (Polynesian sounds) to easy listening (eek!). The jazzy, laid-back style lent itself perfectly to the Playboy-inspired “bachelor life” or “life of leisure”  that was popular with swinging bachelors of the era, hence the name.

Today Bachelor Pad Music is regarded as a higher standard of sophistication, an “out there” kind of cool that’s not found in today’s music. Many of the most popular songs of the era have been revived in movies and on TV shows such as Mad Men, Sex in the City, Pan Am, Warehouse 13 and more.

It’s the right kind of music for an upscale cocktail party or other event where you want that extra “pop” to really impress your guests.
